A fine small vase from the village of Mata Ortiz in Mexico's Chihuahua State known for its ceramic pottery since the 1980s. The pottery style is inspired by the nearby ancient city of Paquimé. Locals have reconnected with this tradition, conserving much of its style, decoration, and color. Mata Ortiz has also undergone a revival of the broader oasisamerica pottery tradition, a similar style of pottery that was traded as far north as New Mexico, Arizona, Southern Utah and Colorado by precontact indigenous peoples in the shared cultural region.
This vase is composed of clay with applied pigment in the oasisamerican style. It rests on a pottery ring covered in fabric for stability. On the bottom, signed by the potter, Enrique Pedregón Ortiz, who is a well known second generation potter learning at the age of 15 from his parents Teodora Ortiz and Reynaldo Pedregón. He is best known for his intricate banded designs and tannish- brown warm earth tones, which are hallmarks of his pots.
