A quality early yataghan sword from North Africa's coastal Algeria during the Ottoman Occupation era. The recurved steel blade is single- edged with a thickened spine. One side is engraved with a section of geometric, linear, and floral motifs. Within, is a deeply stamped maker's mark and the Hijri date of 1192 corresponding to 1778 Gregorian, as well as untranslated Arabic script. The reverse side of the blade also has a section of geometric, linear, and floral motifs with an engraved Seal of Solomon star.

The hilt is carved from rhinoceros horn with a fine grain structure and dark tones. One ear is chipped. The bolster is a metal alloy, possibly pewter with silver repoussé overlay of vine and floral scrollwork. One side of overlay is partially missing. Steel backstrap with incised scrollwork as well. The grips are held together by three dodecagon brass rivets, one now missing. The sheath is still present in poor shape, composed of fluted wood in Algerian manner with an iron mouth and brass chape.

Algerian yataghans are somewhat uncommon compared to other styles from the Balkans and Anatolia. Although this one has condition issues, it would have been a fine example for a noble individual of high societal status in 1778, almost certainly in the Regency of Algiers during the Ottoman reign.
