The original photo was taken in 1984 during the Soviet-Afghan War by American photojournalist Steve McCurry. Her name is Sharbat Gula, and she appeared on the famous June 1985 cover of National Geographic Magazine. At the time, Gula was a 12 year old Afghan refugee near the Pakistani city of Peshawar. Multiple attempts were made to find and identify her in the 1990s, which ultimately failed. It wasn't until another attempt made in 2002 in which she was found again, reavealing Gula's identity from all those years ago, having remembering being photographed in 1984 by Steve Mccurry. At this time, she had been living back in Afghanistan since 1992.
