A very fine and large hanzer type koummya dagger from the region of Western Morocco stamped and dated. The single-edged upcurving steel blade has a medial ridge and thick spine, turning into double-edged halfway to the point. Some light pitting on one side.
The massive rhinoceros horn grips with bright translucency and blonde color hues are capped in a silver lunate pommel in the hanzer style form with beautiful arabesque scrollwork along with its silver collar in the same manner.
The heavy silver sheath is also chiseled in arabesque motifs, florals, and scrolls with two silver baldric suspension rings. Very small hallmarks (goat's head) stamped on both suspesion rings and the chape bulb ring. One side of the sheath is stamped with the hijri date of "298" or 1298, corresponding to (1880/81) gregorian. The revese side is stamped with a small untranslated script, possibly of the maker, owner, or locality of production.
The silver was very dull and tarnished and was cleaned, assuming a low to medium grade silver in the metalwork. A stunning early work of art by Moroccan smiths for an owner of high social status.
