A fine hot water urn manufactured by the Middletown Plate Company dating to around 1870. The company was established in 1864 in Middletown, Connecticut, and produced American silver plated goods as a manufacturer of a variety of products such as flatware, coffee and tea services, and pitchers in nickel silver, silver, triple, quadruple, and more. In 1899, the company moved to Meriden, Connecticut when it merged with the Meriden Britannia Co.
The urn is likely composed of a pewter base that has then been triple plated in a silver exterior. Two curled handles are attached to each side. The removable lid retains a long pronged dome at the top. Embellished in beaded edges and a Grecian pattern band. An engraved ribbon has the initials "WLA" etched into the center. The iron spout is attached by a highly decorated plate in floralwork. The knobs of elephant ivory. Brass base with iron legs. Stamped on the base is the number, "16" for the model number, "Middletown Plate Co." "Triple Plate" and "1790" referring to the shape number. The burner base is missing. Tarnished with minor scratches. A high- quality antique hot water urn.
